What is ULEZ?

ULEZ, something you will be familiar with if you drive in and out of London, but what exactly is it and how might it affect you? Here’s what you need to know.

ULEZ stands for ultra low emissions zone and it is in operation throughout London in the same areas which host the congestion charge.

The purpose of ULEZ is to reduce the carbon footprint of the area and to improve the air quality for those living and working in the capital.

There are certain goalposts your car has to hit in order to comply with ULEZ, else there is a fine every time you travel in and out of the zone.

The standards are as follows

  • Euro 3 for motorcycles, mopeds, motorised tricycles and quadricycles (L category)
  • Euro 4 (NOx) for petrol cars, vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles
  • Euro 6 (NOx and PM) for diesel cars, vans and minibuses and other specialist vehicles
  • Euro VI (NOx and PM) for lorries, buses and coaches and other specialist heavy vehicles (NOx and PM)

There is a fine of £12.50 for smaller and lighter vehicles which do not comply and £100 for lorries and heavier vehicles. You can check out the details on the GOV website.

ULEZ is in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day except Christmas Day, so it is worth being vigilant and if you are looking for a new car, making sure it complies.ULEZ is also set to expand to a wider net in London in October 2021, so even if this doesn’t affect your London travels now, it very well could do in the future.

If you are looking for a ULEZ compliant car, get in touch with a member of the team at Noya Motor Group, where a member of the team will be happy to help you find a vehicle to suit.
